QUESTION: Do you know of a self-propelled gas mower that Mulch, Side Discharge, and Bag and Front-Wheel Drive that is made well and has the ability to move fast? The mowers today are TERRIBLE. My Cub Cadet lasted only four years. I recently bought a YardMax mower, and it is TERRIBLE. I returned the YardMax mower because the FWD is INSANE. The wheels go crazy the moment they touch the ground. Also, the engine claims it is powerful with 201cc, but that is simply not the case. Also, the engine was brand new and took two pulls to start the first time. But after a half hour of using the mower, it took EIGHT PULLS to start the mower. The mower was "Locked" at times with the pulls. And the "speed" of the mower was slow, even on its highest setting it wasn't as fast as the Cub Cadet mower. Also, the YardMax mower could NOT be pulled backwards. The black rubber thing at the bottom in back got tangled up in the mower and you were dragging the entire mower without help from the wheels.

My 15 year old 22" Toro Recycler is still going strong. Starts on 1st pull. I change the oil, filter, and plug at the beginning of every grass cutting season. I run it with ethanol-free gas. I put a new blade on it about every 3 years or so. The only other parts I've had to replace are the drive belt, 2 front wheels (they got slick and didn't really pull anymore), and the self-propelled cable (broken piece that connects it to the handle. Deck has VERY minimal rust as I don't cut grass when it's wet. And I clean it after every use (I use my blower to blow off the grass on top and from underneath).

I bought a Honda HRR 5 years ago and ended up giving it away. Worst piece of crap I ever owned. Had a defective carburetor right out of the box. The Honda power products dealer put a new one on it under warranty, and that one didn’t work either. Three times a charm. A year later, the self propelled transmission failed. The next season the axle bushings seized. (Honda uses a steel axle, that runs thru a steel bushing, that passes thru a steel holder.) Geez... what could go wrong?!?! Toro uses sealed ball bearings. Lastly... I had to cut my lawn twice with the Honda as it left stray grass blades sticking up with one pass (even with new or fresh.y sharpened blades). Most of my neighbors have Toro Personal Pace mowers (two are 20 years old) and they never have problems. I dumped my Honda for a Toro and and never looked back.

@@GarageGear The Milwaukee M18 with their "Quik Lok" system. I have one power head with the string trimmer, edger and pole saw attachments. They are not what I would consider to be professional replacements for gas tools, as I have hit thermal shutdown with all three attachments, but when these battery tools are used, they get used pretty hard and for Joe Homeowner, they work quite well. The Milwaukee tool has a high and low range, turtle or rabbit, with a variable speed trigger. When the motor stops, letting off on the trigger and pulling it again, generally gets the tool going again. When using the edger, putting it in the "turtle" mode or low range seems to work better for me. These tools are much lighter than their gas counter parts.

I grew up with wheeled edgers. I don’t have experience with stick edgers. I know that they are cheaper. Lighter. But, you’re dealing with a stick edgers a tiny 2cycle that revs fairly high and in hot weather it’s going to heat up pretty fast. So, I am not sure which is better for me.

I avoid all new push mowers because there just over priced pieces of garbage, my push mowers are over 20 years old and work great, I take care of them, and keep the under decks clean, good freash fuel, and oil, and if and when one needs to be replaced, I'll get a used one and just fix it up, most items just need a new owner.

Hey GarageGear, love your channel! I've watched many of your videos. I have a dilemma, I've been researching quite a while now on lawn mowers and have been trying to find one that isn't self propelled (For a summer mowing business). I came across the Honda HRN216PKA, but people claim that the PKA models and some of the HRN series mowers miss spots and leave patches in the grass. Do you have any recommendations? Should I look for a different mower or what do you think about the PKA? (I'm not looking for a self propelled because my father said it requires more maintenance and is very annoying when it breaks down, but after watching your HRN216VKA videos, I doubt it, what do you think?)

For me and my yard, a walk behind. Corner lot , sidewalk runs along the curb. So no curb hop needed. Only two very small curved sections. So I just quickly flip edge those. If you have lots of curves and you have to edge along the curb. You will be soooo much happier with a stick edger. If you've got straight lines and don't have to edge against the curb. A walk behind is great to have. Like someone else said, the tripointed blade on the walk behind is superb. It also makes it even worse on any curve too.

I use a Stihl FS130 with an edger head. It has a lot of power and cleans up edges easily. If I'm defining a new planting bed pulling the stick edger backwards cuts a good sharp line in the sod quickly. After I cut the edge of a new bed I switch parts and turn it into a bed redefiner... All the parts are available from Sthil. I use the redefiner to cut the trench at the edge of the bed and use a sharp shovel to remove the sod. I don't know that a walk behind edger would lend itself to such planting bed use. I don't have the Kombi... They were new when I got the FS130 and just needed at heavy duty trimmer/brush cutter at the time. Other needs developed over time so I just bought various heads for the FS130 and change them out as needed. I have string trimmer, edger, bed redefiner, various brush cutter guards and blades, and an articulating hedge clipper for the 130. I have an HT131 pole saw and an HS56 hedge clipper also. The FS130 has proven to be very versatile but many would probably find the KS131 easier to use if they need to change heads often and need that much power! Regarding the "sharp shovel," I sharpen my garden tools with a mill file... various shovels, hoes, weeding hoops, machetes, axes, hatchets, loppers, pruning shears, etc. are easy to sharpen with a file. Hand saws can be hand filed also but require more steps and tools. Sharpening grass whips is easy with a file but scythes take a very different skill set and tools! Things like mattocks and picks are done on a bench grinder. Sharp tools are safer and easier to use!

Red flag is it does not have a greaseable head like the higher models or have the 2:1 gear reduction but a good residential edger none the less for the price which is what their target market is aimed at here.

Definitely get a stick for me great for a landscaping business just like I do so I would buy the stick edger instead of the walk behind so then I wouldn't have to find as much space way better for a lawn care business with a stick edger but that's my opinion but I get a stick edger so I can put it on my rack👍👍👍

I had one and really liked it but Honda couldn't make it to stand up like most new mowers. Cut quality is fantastic and love the mulch lever. I cant stand adding a mulch plug. I bought a Toro Recycler and works great and storage is a plus for me but I do miss the throttle option which is my favorite.

For those of you wondering if the extra dollar a gallon is worth it, I think it is. Been using the good stuff for years now and never have any more issues with carburetors or no starts. I drive 45 minutes out of my way around once a year to get 15 gallons of non ethanol gas. Here in ny it’s around $4.59 a gallon currently. More great tips JB, thanks.

These separate pumps are hard to find where I live. So what I do, is pump 5 liters into my car first before adding gas to the gas can. Not ideal as you pay a lot more for the 91 octane ethanol free gas, but at least I am not getting any or as much in my gas can.
